Independence?

Under normal circumstance, it sometimes seems that preparing a child to be independent is daunting.  For parents who have children with challenges, be they medical, psychological , emotional, educational or physical, this can hold stark terror.  Laurie Wallen makes the point that independence includes teaching them how to advocate for themselves.

Even more, as Christian parents, we want to foster our dependence on our Creator for all things.    Without him, we do not have life or Life.  He promises all we need for life and godliness.

In the past decade, I’ve seen many parts of the Body of Christ stand up and begin to fulfill their God-mandated duty towards the weak.  And they are stronger for it.  Even the weak serve a function in society.  It has been said that  ” any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members — the last, the least, the littlest.”
(~Cardinal Roger Mahony, In a 1998 letter, Creating a Culture of Life).  They provide the opportunity to look beyond ourselves and exhibit true character.
